500 Club (2/17)
It’s Thursday! 500 Clubers, mount up!
First, the directions:
- Choose one of the two prompts below and write a 500 word story on it, or incorporate both prompts into your work, if you’re feeling daring.
- Post your freshly squeezed 500 word story on your blog.
- Paste the first line or so of your story in the comments below, with a link back to the rest of your story.
Don’t have a blog? No problem! Paste your story into our handy-dandy widget over there on the right and send it to us.
And now for today’s prompts.
Prompt #1: Write a story set after the apocalypse.
Prompt #2: Write a story about a person who can hear the thoughts of animals.
Remember, these exercises are just intended simply to get you moving. Don’t worry about the end result, just enjoy yourself! Happy writing!

Hi Amy – first time out trying this. Thanks for creating opportunities like this on your blog.
“I guess I’ve always just been lucky that way.” After the Apocalypse
Hey Scribbla, thanks for coming out to play. Loved the twist at the end!
Hi Amy,
My first time, too. Very cool and thanks. I followed scribbla over (thanks to you too scribbla). I’m not sure I know how to link to my post correctly. If it doesn’t come through, maybe you can help me out.
“The snow lasted a couple of years. It was hard to find food to supplement my bomb shelter stash, but eventually I taught myself to hunt and trap small mammals. Prey is easy to catch when you can eavesdrop on their plans.” They’ve all rotted away now
Hi Blue Sky! Your link worked just fine.
I love how you worked both prompts into your piece.
Thanks, Amy. It was super fun. I’m just beginning to flex my writer muscles for real, and it is fun, scary, crazy hard, heartbreaking and insanely exhilarating. I’m glad I was led to your site. I’ve subscribed, but I’m not sure if I’m getting your posts or not right now.
I like your blog and look forward to writing more stories based on your prompts.
Uma (my “real” name—well, one of them)
I totally agree with you that writing is all of those things, and we’re glad to have you here too! As to the subscription feed, the site stats are showing you as subscribed, so you should be good to go!
Harold’s eyes opened. He looked around, confused.
“Why am I awake?” He thought. “It must be early.” The glow of the orange sunrise pressed on the curtains of his room. He glanced at the clock, but it was flashing 12:00.

Hey Jessica, thanks for sharing! Good stuff! (Would it be wrong to say creepy stuff? ‘Cuz it scared me a bit.)
Personally, I think it’s never too late to post a flash for the 500 Club, I’m so glad that you did.
It seems like I haven’t participated to this in ages. It feels good to be back.
Silence
For years I wished for silence, a concept I could barely fathom with the constant screeching of mistakes, honking of contrariety and beeping of validation that plagued modern life.
