You’re right. It’s all about finding the right story. Those million or so possibilities are what make each story unique. And picking the right sequence of those possibilities most definitely will happen in edits.

I have the opposite problem. I know exactly where it’s going and about the half the important things that need to happen to get there. My problem is that the other half of those important things are lost within a pool of about ten million possibilities.

It’s really hard to sometimes to try and pick what belongs and what doesn’t. I think a writer’s greatest skill may just be editing. You can write, write, write all you want, but if you can’t shave it down to an intelligible, well-rounded, story of appropriate length and detail…

Anyway, thanks for the post! Useful advice. =)

I have a twisted mind, but I try to have fun with my insanity. Recreational lunacy, I guess. I mean, you might as well enjoy the ride, right?

Seriously, though, thanks. When I thought of opposites, for some reason I thought of birth and death. What’s a step beyond death? Zombies. It was perfect. And practical. After all, the zombie apocalypse is coming. Just doing my part to make sure we’re all prepared. Now if you find yourself at a child’s party when the walking dead overtake us, you know exactly what to do.
