Happy Thursday, y’all! It’s time to write some flash with the 500 Club!

How do you play? Here’s the rules.

  1. Choose one of the prompts below. (or get crazy and do both)
  2. On your blog, write a 500-word story or scene based on the prompt.
  3. Post the first line or two of your story in the comments below with a link to the rest.

Here are today’s prompts:

1. Alien Invasion. They’re here, and they’re not what you would think. Twins? Cats? Cars? Only our narrator knows the truth (or does (s)he)?

2. Go pull one of your favorite books off the shelf. Flip around and blindly pluck out five lines at random. Write a flash fiction inspired by at least one of the lines.

Bod had never walked anywhere as a sightseer before.

He was going to have to fall straight down, he decided, onto the steps, and he would just hope that the ghouls wouldn’t notice that he was making a break for it in their desperation to be home and safe.

Mrs. Owens said simply, “I cannot. My bones are here. And so are Owen’s. I’m never leaving.”

“I wanted to go to Acadia Avenue.”

“First we put you somewhere safe. Then we deal with them.”

1. Write a story in which one character is selling something to one or more other characters. Use your imagination.

2. Write a scene in which two characters carry on a conversation but neither understands what the other is truly saying. Subtext and subtlety are key.

Another Thursday, another 500 Club. The rules remain the same.

1. Write 500 words based on one of the two prompts.
2. Post it to your blog.
3. Copy the first couple of lines in the comments below with a link to the full text.

But, wait! There’s more!

If you don’t have your own blog or website, and you’re just dying to play along, now you can. In the sidebar on the right you’ll find a text box where you can paste your 500 words and submit it straight to us. So go for it!

As your fearful moderator, Sleep Sunshine, I’ve come up with something different-ish this A.M.  Part of what we do as writers is try to tap into the emotion of our lives and translate that real feeling into our fictional art.  Two writing prompts are below.  I want you to read each of them, one at a time, and following reading each one, I want you to close your eyes and for several minutes meditate with the goal of trying to physically feel in your guts the raw emotion that each moment inspires and then use that emotion to drive you to write a flash fiction piece (500 words…unless you’re rightly motivated, then go nuts…like I did a bit…oops) inspired by not the circumstance but strictly the emotion the factual memory inspired.

1)  Think of the worst moment in your life up to date.  Close your eyes and re-live this moment.  Try and re-create the raw emotional response to this moment.  Go.

2) Think of the happiest moment in your life to date.  Close your eyes and re-live this moment.  Try and re-create the raw emotional response to this moment.  Go.
