The Least I Can Do
I’m having one of those days right now. Let’s take a peak at my internal processes. First let me skip past the six or seven hundred times I hit the snooze button. Isn’t that always how days like these start?
Once I’m actually out of bed and moving through the day I only have one thought running through my head:
What is the least I can get away with doing to make it through the day without incident?
And here are my list of answers to that:
- Take care of kids.
- Look presentable (includes proper hygiene).
- Survive work.
- Eat periodically throughout the day.
- Clean or fix one thing at home (this usually keeps the spouse happy).
- Go to bed.
That’s the bare bones of it. No frills. No thrills. Just a path to get me through the day. Although now I’ve added one more task to that list.
- Write at least 500 words.
It might not seem big, but for me it’s a major change in thinking. The above list consists of thing of necessity. They have to get done to avoid disastrous consequences. Up until now, the new item didn’t fall into that category. It should have, but it didn’t.
Your dreams and aspirations are important. If you don’t do at least one thing to work towards them, you are doing yourself the greatest injustice. Even on days where you’re doing just enough to get by, you can’t ignore your D ‘n’ A. You were made that way, don’t fight it.
So as of this post, I’ve knocked out half my list, including 289 words. What are you going to do today?
