I can certainly relate and have been in each one of these places. However, I find it more fun to turn these things around and look at them in a different way, such as:

I embrace the hard work of writing and revel in the feeling of accomplishment.
I choose to start writing and schedule my obsessions for later.
I trust that whatever my concerns are, they will work themselves out in the practice of my craft.

Or something like that—you get the idea. This makes it feel much more like a game, and less like a chore. Of course even this doesn’t work some days and I find myself drifting off . . .

Brilliant!
Thank you so much for this piece of magical storytelling.
I’m giving a presentation to our writing group on the subject of the story arc and they don’t know it yet,but they’re about to ride on a rollercoaster.I hope you don’t mind if I use your analogy, with appropriate credit of course!
With Best Wishes,
Harry Dunn

This is brilliant – thank you. I have to make a presentation to my writing group and they don’t know it yet,but they’re about to take a ride on a rollercoaster.
Thank you very much for this piece of magical storytelling.
Best Wishes,

PS My debut novel ‘Smile of the Viper’ will be published in September 2012 and when I wrote it,I’d never heard of the story arc. How lucky is that.

Once you notice the RF connection, you’ll see it pop up all over King’s work. I just think it’s the coolest thing ever.

Why not do the same for your internet use and gaming and, well why not, the day dreaming too? Fifteen minutes each? Or 30 minutes a day for one, alternating activity each day? Just a thought.

I recently found myself blogging (and reading blogs) more than writing or anything else for that matter. I got rid of all the email notifications and now I just go to the Reader section of WordPress console thingy and read the blogs I follow from there once every other day. I only comment on the posts I feel I can contribute to and Like the ones I, well, like. It is working so far. :)

Read your piece on Randall Flagg and have been a bit blown away by it. Can’t believe I never noticed the connection before. Thanks!
