500 Club (9/16)

Hello and happy Thursday to you.

Ready for some writing fun? Here’s how the 500 Club works:

  1. Choose one of the two prompts below.
  2. Write 500 words in response to the prompt.
  3. Post your brilliant flash fiction piece on your blog.
  4. Paste the first line or two in the comments here, along with a link to where we can read the rest of your brilliant work.

-OR-

If you don’t have a blog, use our handy-dandy utility box over there in the right column to paste your 500 words and send them to us.

Remember this is about having fun while warming up your writing muscles. No pressure for perfection, okay?

Here are today’s prompts:

  1. Write a story using “[CHARACTER NAME] never liked the color red” as the first sentence.
  2. Write a story in response to your favorite painting or work of visual art (either using the painting in the story, or creating the story from the elements of the painting).

Ready? Set? WRITE!

    red sweater

I’ve never liked the color red. I suppose many people would think this to be problematic, given my profession. The truth is that there are a variety of ways to kill a person that involve no blood at all. Unfortunately, many of the easiest and quickest do involve blood. Often, plenty of it. Read more…

Heather never liked the color red. It is the very antithesis of her. She liked to take life slow and easy and cheaply. Red, it seemed, was not only hot but expensive. It had cost her more in life than she had been willing to pay or could afford, but red does not care, it merely incited and excited all that was in its presence. Read More

    Reconciliation
I never liked the color red. I wouldn’t even poke it with a stick. So when the saleswoman asked me to smear a stick of it on my lips, I never thought red would change my life.

Danny never liked the color red. It was the color of blood. The color of rage. He had seen plenty of blood. He felt a lot of rage.

    Woman Ironing

She presses her body into the iron. Her head is low with the weight she bears heavy on her shoulders. The fresh bruises on her arms, neck and face are reminders of how he demands his creases. Anything less will only result in more reminders. Read More
