The Halloween season is upon us, and the 500 Club is not exempt. This week’s prompts are aimed at getting you closer to your inner creepy, but first the rules.

2. Writing Challenge: In 500 words, convey a sense of fear without using the word “fear” or a derivative there of (afraid, scared, frightened, etc.).
I closed my eyes and leaned up against the icy cold concrete wall. Shivers ran up and down my spine as I tried to catch my breath. My chest ached and I had a cramp in my side. Suddenly, I heard crunching leaves and footsteps thudding toward me. My already racing heart went into overdrive. I snapped my eyes open and searched for a way to escape.

My Campfire Story
The campfire warmed our faces but didn’t touch the icy chill that was left by Steve. Kari looks around waiting for something to jump out of the shadows. She feels exposed sitting out by the fire, forest surrounding them. Steve leans closer to the fire. The shadow and the flame cast an eerie glow over his face, distorting his features.

Chameleons
The sun shone high and basked the forest in its heat. I shivered. Light meant they could see me, as if their hearing wasn’t enough. Plus, my sweat left a smelly trail on every leaves whacking my body as I brushed by. The sun might as well serve me on a silver platter. Bastard.
