Special 500 Club (7/21)

Welcome back to the 500 Club. We have a treat for you today. One of our regular participants of the 500 Club has graciously agreed to guest post the prompts. We at The PLC would like to thank Dex for taking the time to come up with these and allowing us the opportunity to share them with the 500 Club community. Make sure you check out what he’s doing at his blog. So without further ado:

First, let me say what a pleasure it is to be able to contribute to the PLC. I’ve been reading this blog for a while and I have to tell you, it’s good stuff. I highly recommend it. Of course, you’re already here, aren’t you? So…you’ve likely already read it.

Well, perhaps it’s time for you to take things up a notch and make your own contribution. Oh yeah, kids, I’m talking about the 500 Club.

“What’s the 500 Club?” you ask.

It goes like this:

1. Below you will find two writing prompts. You pick one and churn out 500 words of flash fiction. There’s no right or wrong way to approach it. Just bring your imagination and have fun.

2. Post whatever you come up with to your own blog.

3. Copy the first 2-3 lines in the comments to this post and be sure to include a link to your blog so we can read the rest.

“But, Dex,” you say, “I don’t have a blog.”

No worries. See that text box just to the right in the sidebar? Copy-and-paste your 500 words there and you can submit them straight to the PLC.

“So where are these prompts I’ve heard so much about?” you ask.

Slow down there, buckaroo. I had no idea you were so excited to get started. But, in that case, here are your prompts. Have fun.

Prompt 1: Write a scene based on one of your favorite songs. If possible, use some of the lyrics as descriptive text or dialogue.

Prompt 2: Write a scene from the bad guy’s perspective, drawing the reader into his/her mind in such a way as to make his/her evil actions sympathetic. The more villainous while still sympathetic, the better.

  1. Hi Dex! :) Great prompts. I chose the first one, cuz I’m a sucker for songs with lyrics that make me want to write. Here’s my story for today:

    Shiver
Amber wakes every day at eight with the covers off and the sun draping swaths of light across her skin. She lies still, her eyes taking in the morning but not really seeing. Not yet.

And here is my contribution, also based on the first prompt.

    karma
“Police! Arrest this man!” Harold ran along the sidewalk careening back and forth as though the city were twisting beneath him.

  3. S. C. Green says:

Alright. I attempted BOTH prompts, but think I missed the mark on the second one. In any case, here you go:

    Passive
My breath still came heavy even though the melee had ended. Skirmishes could still be heard at the fringes of copse, but here at the center all were still, looking down on the body of King Hallow.

  4. Amy McLane says:

Hey Dex, I ended up getting a 2300 word story out of this one, and I think it’s good enough to shop. Thanks so much for the kickass prompts.
